It’s important that we RE-CREATE

July 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I have found that in ministry it is very easy for the lines to get blurry as they pertain to work life, social life, family life, and recreation. If we’re not careful we’ll wake up one day to find that there are no lines and we spend 80+ hours a week at “work”. So, in order to protect myself from “imbalance” I make sure to work intentional recreation into my life.

Over the years in one way or another I have used football to re-create myself emotionally, mentally, physically, and even spirtiually. Whether it is watching, playing, or coaching I have been somehow involved in it. Since moving down here to Florida, I have recently gotten on at a local high school as an assistant coach. I spend about 6 hours a week (until the fall that is) helping out however I can. Here are the advantages I see:

1. Coaching is a Recreational Outlet. I’m able to do something active that I love and that energizes me.  In other words….It’s fun!

2. Coaching allows me to appropriately ‘escape‘ from the worries of work.  When I’m out there I can forget everything and focus on football.

3. Coaching allows me to volunteer in the community using my gifts and passions.  We should all be volunteering in some way or another.  I get to do something I love and hopefully impact young lives in the process.

4. It’s Evangelistic.  I get to hang out in a non-threatening way with many people who do not know Christ.  You’d be surprised how many evangelistic conversations I get to engage in that I don’t even initiate.

Can’t wait for those Friday Night Lights!
